Tentoonstelling met fotografische werken van Hans van der Kamp, gemaakt tussen 1977 en 2020.
Van 6 t/m 30 augustus bij NDSM-Fuse.
Vanaf 25 juli is er in het kader van Pride een “Prequel” tentoonstelling met werken uit de serie Gender! te zien.
Hans van der Kamp (1955) is studiofotograaf sinds de jaren zeventig. Zijn eerste belangrijke opdrachtgever was de Nieuwe Revu en het fotograferen voor het tijdschrift bracht structuur in zijn werk. Tot op de dag van vandaag werkt hij thematisch en werkt hij die thema’s uit in de vorm van portretten. Hoe onschuldig deze manier van werken ook lijkt, hij is in de VS en Rusland een omstreden fotograaf. Een provocateur.
Zelf snapt hij weinig van deze classificatie, omdat hij zijn portretten als redelijk onschuldig ziet. Regelmatig werd zijn werk als pornografie bestempeld. Kennelijk is de suggestie van seksualiteit in portretten soms nog controversiëler dan de uitbeelding van seksuele handelingen.
In New York werd een steen door de ruit van een galerie gegooid toen zijn thema Aged to Perfection, een reeks naakten van vrouwen ouder dan veertig jaar getoond werd. Minder mysterieus waren de pogingen in Moskou om zijn werken bij herhaling met knuppels en zoutzuur te lijf te gaan. Veel van de werken die daar hingen toonden transgenders, drag queens en travestieten. De werken waren een doorn in het oog van de Russisch Orthodoxe Kerk, een geheel onverwachte hoek, omdat zowel de museumdirecteur als Van der Kamp verwacht hadden dat het werk in strijd was met de ‘Wet tegen Homopropoganda’.
In 1996 begon Van der Kamp een aantal sites op het nog zeer jonge Internet, waaronder een tijdschrift met literatuur en beeldende kunst en een virtueel museum voor Erotische Kunst. Hij genoot van de vrijheid die het Internet hem bood, totdat op social media bleek dat zijn werken in steeds strijd waren met de algemene voorwaarden.
Van der Kamp’s zag in dat censuur niet het grootste gevaar is, maar vooral zelfcensuur, een ontwikkeling die dodelijk is voor beeldende kunst.
De overzichtstentoonstelling die 6 augustus opent in NDSM-fuse toont werken van de periode 1977-2020. De thema’s zijn divers. U treft er onder andere hoogtepunten aan uit series als Rockers, Gender Benders, The Pleasures of Kink, Aged to Perfection, The Russians Are Coming, Gender!, Mistresses, Girls, Girls, Girls en Burlesque.
Hans van der Kamp (1955) is naast fotograaf ook illustrator en filmer. Hij was hoofdredacteur van de Nederlandse Playgirl en High Society, oprichter van het eerste Internettijdschrift voor Nederlandstalige literatuur De Opkamer en het druk bezochte World Museum of Erotic Art. In 1993 verscheen zijn roman Nette Mensen in een nieuwe tijd bij uitgeverij L.J. Veen. Daarnaast schreef hij voor diverse uitgaven, waaronder Zero, Vrij Nederland, Nieuwe Revu en Propria Cures.

Exhibition of Photographic Works by Hans van der Kamp, Created Between 1977 and 2020

Starting July 25, a “Prequel” exhibition showcasing works from the Gender! series will be on display as part of Pride.
Hans van der Kamp (1955) has been a studio photographer since the 1970s. His first major client was Nieuwe Revu, and working for the magazine brought structure to his craft. To this day, he works thematically, developing these themes in the form of portraits. While this approach may seem innocuous, he is a controversial figure in both the United States and Russia—a provocateur.
Van der Kamp himself struggles to understand this classification, as he views his portraits as relatively harmless. His work has often been labeled as pornography, revealing that the suggestion of sexuality in portraits can sometimes be more provocative than the explicit depiction of sexual acts.
In New York, a stone was thrown through the window of a gallery during the exhibition of Aged to Perfection, a series of nudes featuring women over forty. In Moscow, attacks on his work were less mysterious, with repeated attempts to destroy the pieces using clubs and acid. Many of the works displayed there depicted transgender individuals, drag queens, and crossdressers. These pieces were a thorn in the side of the Russian Orthodox Church—an entirely unexpected source of opposition, as both the museum director and Van der Kamp had anticipated that the works would primarily clash with Russia’s “Law Against Gay Propaganda.”
In 1996, Van der Kamp launched several websites during the early days of the Internet, including a magazine featuring literature and visual art and a virtual museum for Erotic Art. He enjoyed the freedom the Internet offered until social media platforms increasingly deemed his works to be in violation of their terms of service.
Van der Kamp realized that censorship itself was not the greatest threat but rather self-censorship—a development he considers deadly for visual art.
The retrospective exhibition opening on August 6 at NDSM-Fuse features works from the period 1977–2020. The themes are diverse, including highlights from series such as Rockers, Gender Benders, The Pleasures of Kink, Aged to Perfection, The Russians Are Coming, Gender!, Mistresses, Girls, Girls, Girls, and Burlesque.
Hans van der Kamp (1955) is not only a photographer but also an illustrator and filmmaker. He served as editor-in-chief of the Dutch editions of Playgirl and High Society, founded the first online magazine for Dutch-language literature (De Opkamer), and created the widely visited World Museum of Erotic Art. In 1993, his novel Nette Mensen in een Nieuwe Tijd was published by L.J. Veen. Additionally, he has written for various publications, including Zero, Vrij Nederland, Nieuwe Revu, and Propria Cures.
